It begins the same each and every morning, just as the sun peaks its curious head above the horizon and the birds start to chirp, announcing the dawning of another day. Every bleary-eyed landscaper, stubborn and committed to his or her cause, rises in eager anticipation, preparing for the grueling day ahead. The Atlantic City Special Improvement District's Landscaping Division (above right at Kennedy Plaza) embodies these qualities and its commitment towards the beauty of the city is apparent. Since its inception in 1995, the landscaping Division has turned many vacant lots into lush, green parks and unsightly, overgrown stretches of grass into neatly manicured works of art complete with flowers, trees, shrubs and mulch. This case has been particularly true this year as the Landscaping Division, headed by Manager Jon Bitzer, five supervisors and 16 crew members, completed some of its most glorious projects to date.
Over the course of four weeks, with the help of six to eight landscapers each day, the site that formerly housed Major League Dairy, was transformed. Nearly 40,000 square feet of sod was laid, while 360 tons of fill soil and 200 tons of top soil were poured. An 18-zone irrigation system was installed to ensure that the sod,
