This
summer, ACSID began a new Boardwalk program that brings added safety
and
cleanliness to the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Funded by the CRDA, the program
combines
Environmental Service with an Ambassador Bike Patrol to keep the Boardwalk
clean and
safe for the enjoyment of all visitors.
An intensive cleaning and sweeping operation (see vacuum units, left)
removes an
average of 1800 gallons of garbage from the Boardwalk every week and
utilizes
powerwashers and steam cleaners to remove stubborn stains, gum and grime.
Meanwhile, ACSID Ambassador Bike Patrol personnel (shown, left) systematically
tour
the Boardwalk daily, 10am-2am, to maintain security and assist Boardwalk
visitors with
various issues of concern such as reuniting lost children and the elderly
with their
caregivers and, in cases of emergency, linking our visitors with the
proper authorities.
While
the Environmental Service Division sweeps and vacuums the entire District
daily all year long, in the spring and summer months specialized steam
cleaning
units are utilized to rid the District of gum and grime that accumulates
over the
fall and winter months and maintain that standard of cleanliness throughout
the
busy summer season. In the fall these units are drained and stored away,
waiting
for warmer weather when it is once again safe to use them.
While the
Environmental Service Division's primary focus is on keeping
the District clean, there are other services that can make a big difference
in maintaining the appearance of a clean, safe and beautiful downtown.
A fresh coat of paint brings new life to aluminum poles, black light posts,
public telephones, trash cans, benches and bus shelters on Atlantic
Avenue and the Boardwalk.
Vacant city lots benefit from regular attention. Keeping the grass cut,
trees
and bushes trimmed and removing debris and litter from these unused
spaces prevents larger problems from developing.
Graffitti removal is another important service. We have found that vandals
are less likely to "tag" an area if all traces of their handiwork
is removed
as soon as it is found.
