But, as the years have gone by, the luxury of enclosed shopping centers has diminished. Shoppers once again yearn for the downtown atmosphere. Downtowns have long been known for their people-friendly establishments and tree-lined sidewalks bustling with local shoppers who stop to say hello and chat about the current town gossip. Main Street New Jersey, a program of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, was established in 1989 as a way to provide communities with the essential skills, knowledge and training needed to operate their downtown business district. A four-point approach, which stresses organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring, is used while emphasizing downtown revitalization. Main Street New Jersey believes in retaining the old charm and feel of downtowns through the reuse and rehabilitation of older structures and incorporating them with modern amenities. As the City of Atlantic City has begun to envision its own downtown revitalization plan, it has turned to Main Street New Jersey for assistance. Over the years, Atlantic City's main downtown shopping district, Atlantic Avenue, has seen the effects that nearby shopping malls inflict. This traditional downtown district features an eclectic mix of specialty shops that serve the diverse Atlantic City population. While catering to the local populous is of utmost importance, attracting business from potential customers in surrounding communities and tourists is paramount too. The City of Atlantic City has a vision of a clean, safe and thriving downtown-shopping district, complete with establishments that will provide goods and services for local residents, tourists and business employees. The merchants and casinos of the Special Improvement District, local organizations and volunteers are committed to helping Atlantic City achieve this goal, which is essential to the long term success of community.
