Upon their removal,
most of the trees, shrubs and flowers were transported to the park, where
they are the centerpiece of this enormous project (right).While the finishing
touches were being applied along Michigan Avenue, bulldozers began the
regarding of the land (preceding page) and the filling of new soil at
the park. 83 holes, 3-feet deep, The remaining trees
that were not used for the Melrose and Massachusetts avenues park were
replanted in O'Donnell Park. Thousands of flowers and shrubs that went
unused were offered to local residents as well. With the ground now
prepared, the path of the walkway throughout the park was outlined and
poured with concrete (left). Winding through the park, the walkway enables
those strolling through, the opportunity to walk around the entire park
while soaking in the views from every possible angle. At the two off-street
entrances, decorative brick pavers and wooden bollards were installed. A vital ingredient
to any park is a healthy and lush green lawn. Prior to laying 65,000 square
feet of turf, an elaborate irrigation Finishing touches
then were applied as benches and lighting were added to give the park
a safe and comfortable feeling.
