| But, modern technology alone doesn't guarantee that all sidewalks and streets will remain free of litter and debris. The traditional manpower method is still vitally important today. Several EVS team members carry pans and brooms and personally see to it that trash is eliminated.
When winter breaks and spring dawns, the EVS team begins the repainting of aluminum light poles, bus shelters,Boardwalk benches and planters, and Boardwalk information tea house gazebos. Between April and November, duties, such as sidewalk power washing, scrubbing and steam cleaning; vacant lot cutting and graffiti removal are undertaken. Aside from its routine daily cleaning schedule, the EVS team along the way has chipped in to accomplish other tasks beyond its normal call of duty. In 1989, the historic Albany Avenue monument was painstakingly restored to its original luster; each and every year after the annual Miss America Parade the Boardwalk is thoroughly cleaned; and the graffiti removal program eliminates graffiti within the first 24 hours of it being reported. In 2003 with the grand opening of Atlantic City Outlets - The Walk shopping and entertainment complex, the EVS team was contracted to provide cleaning and light security services on a daily basis. Armadillo Minuteman Sweepers traverse the sidewalks and pick up trash along Michigan Avenue between Atlantic and Baltic avenues. EVS team members with pans and brooms comb the area and get into the hard-to-reach areas, while sidewalk steam cleaning and gum removal is performed from 6 - 10 a.m.
along the world famous Boardwalk; at McClinton, Fishermen's and Brighton parks; at the ACSID office; and at many other locations in the city. Manager Dan Pirillo knows the value of hard work and determination, and his spirit and drive can be seen in the performance of his EVS team and all that they have accomplished over the past 11 years. Pirillo boasts, "I can say with a good deal of assurance that in most cases we have set the bar for Special Improvement Districts in this country." |
