Atlantic City's symbol of gratitude and respect towards its fallen police and fire heroes, the Police and Firefighter's Memorial (right), has stood proudly at City Hall Plaza for the past six years. In late-October, the ACSID's Environmental Services Division restored the memorial and its marble wall to its original luster.

First, the wall was power washed with a degreaser and steam cleaned with hot water. Years of harsh weather conditions had reduced the visibility of the 58 names that adorn the memorial's marble wall. A white grout was applied into the names to give them a bright-white appearance. A damp sponge was used to wipe off any excess matter before the surface received a polished finish.

The fountain at Garden Pier (left), located on the Boardwalk at New Jersey Avenue, had fallen into disrepair before a cooperative effort between the city of Atlantic City's Public Works Department and the Special Improvement District came to the rescue in September.

Water initially was drained and cleaned before chiseling out all of the fountain's cracks. A water-resistant concrete was used to fill the cracks and a silicon caulk to fill the joints. Power washing eliminated unsightly dirt and the bottom of the fountain was topped off with a blue coat of paint.

Also, getting a facelift were the most historical features of the fountain, the two gargoyle heads that once adorned the face of the old Marlborough Blenheim Hotel. Concrete planters, located on the Boardwalk at the entrance to the pier, were repainted and cleaned too. The Landscaping Division worked hand-in-hand with Public Works to replace the fountain's pump and feeding line, which runs under the Boardwalk to the pump.
