the project then starts within 45 days.

This timeline, though, is subject to change if budgetary, zoning, code enforcement or any other time-delaying issues arise. In total, 12-18 months are needed before a facade improvement project gets off of the ground. Meanwhile, the average construction time for a project ranges from 6-12 weeks..

Gaining Momentum

By the start of 2001, the Facade Program was charging full-speed ahead and gaining momentum with the completion of each passing project. Renovated facades were beginning to appear on nearly every block throughout the district. No longer was the program just a rumor, the public was now taking notice and the response was a positive one.

"The facade makes our store look like a professional business that serves the community as a whole," said Maripat Perone of Triangle Reprocenter. "Our employees have a sense of pride that shows in their work."

Situated at Atlantic Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Boulevard, Triangle Reprocenter and Tax World's (above, before,
and right, after) facade enhancement significantly
improved the aesthetics of the surrounding neighborhood.

Layers of old paint were stripped from the facades before a
fresh coat could be applied. New colorful awnings were hung above the respective entrances and bright new signage advertises the establishment's identities. A skillful hand was used to adorn ceramic tiles to the facade's bulkheading below the windows.

Prior to the commencement of facade enhancements, a colorful historical mural was installed on the side of Triangle Reprocenter facing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. This mural features images of Atlantic City's storied past and is a pleasing site for the eye when traveling along the boulevard.

"We have seen a large increase in the number of patrons because of the planters, which patrons state remind them of rich country living in the city," said Curt Taylor, owner of Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant, which received an outdoor cafe (left) in 2000. "I would recommend the Facade Program to all businesses."

"The Facade Program has definitely helped the city, the businesses in the area and it has helped give shoppers a nice, clean and safe shopping environment," said Larry Miller, owner of Miller's Menswear. "It's a great program that has been well received by the business community."

Derrick and Gregory Brock, owners of Mutual Taxi, added, "Business has increased due to our new facade. In a world of high-profile images, we had none. Now thanks to our new look, we feel we can compete."
